City of Trenton Cold Weather Advisory: Heating Advisory for Landlords and Tenants
Release Date: December 29, 2017

City of Trenton Cold Weather Advisory

Heating Advisory for Landlords and Tenants

(Spanish Version)

The City of Trenton Department of Inspections enforces City ordinances that require a temperature of 68°F be maintained from 7 AM to 11 PM and at least 60°F from 11 PM to 7 AM. For apartment buildings with more than three units, a temperature of 65°F must be maintained from 11 PM to 7 AM. Additionally, a property’s heating equipment must be in good and safe working condition and capable of adequately heating all habitable rooms.

Tenants with faulty heating equipment or indoor temperatures below these standards and who have notified their landlords can call the Department of Inspections at (609) 989-3560. We ask that you leave a message and an inspector will return all calls in the order that they were received.

Residents are advised not to use the oven or kerosene heat as sources of heat. Do not use a space heater indoors that requires combustible fuel.

Moreover, during periods of severe cold weather, the following resources are available for Trenton residents, the homeless and senior citizens:

(Seniors Centers are open from Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

For all other emergencies, please contact Trenton Police Department Dispatch at 609-989-4170.

We also remind residents that per City ordinance and State statute, all household pets must be brought inside when the temperature dips below 32 degrees.  Outside dog houses or kennels, are not sufficient unless they are heated.

With these frigid temperatures, there is the risk of losing pets if they are out for a prolonged period of time.  They are allowed out for 15 minutes at a time.

Finally, the Trenton Police Department has dedicated a unit of officers to ensure residents are not left on streets overnight.
